Perhaps the Only Book of Its Kind

Samuel Tait, Jr. (1898-1954) was the son of a successful oil man who had "followed the oil" from Pennsylvania to Indiana, where he had once had 7,000 acres under lease and over 500 producing wells before selling out to the Ohio Oil Company. Sam Jr. was a lawyer licensed to practice in Indiana and Missouri. His memoir was originally published by Princeton in 1946. What makes Tait's narrative exceptional is that it traces the development of the industry from its start in Pennsylvania through the development of the California fields. It is perhaps the only account of the Indiana Oil Boom (c.1890-1907), an era when Indiana was second only to Pennsylvania in oil production. Tait's hometown, Montpelier, IN, was in the overlap zone between the oil fields that were mostly to the north and the gas fields that extended to the south, making the town a center of the conflicts between the two types of producers. The author led a cosmopolitan lifestyle: his obituaries noted he was a member of a church in Ft. Wayne, where he was also a member of the Fortnightly Club, and that he was also a member of the University Club and the Players Club in New York City. Though this appears to have been his only book, he also contributed articles to the American Mercury magazine. But he was content to live out his life in Montpelier, where he had lived since 1903 and where his former house still stands. Over the span of his lifetime, he watched his hometown grow to a place of nearly 10,000 and then shrink to a place of barely 3,000 (about its current population) after the boom had ended.
