More like 3.5 stars
By Catalina
I normally don't write reviews but I felt compelled for Burn. I loved Smolder. So much I have been compulsively checking amazon for Burn since the beginning of December (when it was supposed to come out). Burn picked up right where Smolder left us…and it was amazing! I sat there and read all 400 pages in one day. But I am left with so-so feeling about the book, mainly due to the fact the ending almost had me yelling at my e-reader.
*SPOILER*…He gave up her kid! That by no means is acceptable. And she just lets it go with little fuss. Yes, there is some initial protest but she ends back with him, has a couple of kids, and the epilogue picks up 7 years later! 7 years and she still hasn't gotten her Boy back! Ugh. Now I am just disgusted. Marina should've hightailed it to the Wastelands and gotten her Boy back and not put up with Koen until he fixed his mistake. I will wait and see how Ms. Fletcher spins the third book (there is going to be a third book right?) to hopefully make my absolute disgust with Marina more bearable. Let's just not wait 2 years for the next book please.

Totally Gutted
By Joanne
I read the first book, it was great so I couldn't wait for the second one to come out; "SPOILER ALERT".............. burn continued with the same people and story so was easy to follow, the heroine fighting to complete quests to win her love (King Koen) while he supported her anyway he could, sounds good right? well this writer (who has totally annoyed the hell out of me) suddenly decided that the heroine would become ruled by her vagina! let me explain, in the first book, the heroine adopted a young boy who had been thrown away by his family (not pure blood) which made the hero his adopted father......... on the last quest when the heroine was attacked by another participant (against the rules) and thought dead by everyone including her hero, father and friends the hero (apparently in deep sorrow) gave the adopted son away to the same people who threw him away in the first place, he told the boy that his adopted mother wanted him to go back (he lied) and then the hero (having trouble calling him a hero now) went around blaming everyone for her death when he knew it was a possibility ...... the heroine is found days later and when she finds out that her adopted son was given away by the man she had been fighting for she initially becomes very angry and refuses to have anything to do with ANY of her friends, family or Koen BUT he climbs in her window one night and pushes her to have sex, and then she announces she is expecting twins and the hero says "I wont let them down" and they go on to live many years down the track; The epilogue starts the story of the given back adopted son and how he is managing in the desert being chased by his enemies (yup you guessed it, the same ones that he was given too)! you have to BUY the next book............... my issues are, what women would forgive any man for giving away her child (adopted or not) and what women would let that same man around her other children? the heroine turned into a orgasm addictive wimpy female AND might I add, the majority of woman would have cut off his balls rather then let anyone give there child away. Can I ask the writer why? if she wanted to have a follow on book she could have ended it at the point of the heroine being thought dead or thought more about how this would read by other woman............ so NO I will not be reading anymore of this series or possibly this writer....... fantasy this book may be but it still needs to be believable; I suppose the next book is where they all meet up again after we read about the trials the adopted son has to go through, forgive and forget with a happy ending, bah!

Great creativity, poor writing: a critique
By A.J.
As a fan of Smolder, as well as Penelope Fletcher's "Rae Wilder" series, I'm fairly familiar with Ms. Fletcher's work. After waiting near 2 years, Burn picks up exactly where Smolder left us, and continues to excite us with the twists and turns their tale takes. However, in the end and overall, the book was disappointing. Amidst *several* grammatical and spelling errors throughout the 400 or so odd pages, the writing at times was very disconnected and spotty, often leading to confusion over who was speaking, where the scene was taking place, etc. In addition to that, the inconsistency in the characters demeanors and personalities from Smolder, and the beginning to the end of this book, was really frustrating (re: Daniil, and Anastasia, as well as Mikhail and Cathryn). And finally, at the end, Marina is distraught over the situation with Boy, and she waits 7 years before deciding to do something extreme to get him back? That doesn't follow with the personality she started with in Smolder or at the beginning of Burn. All in all, I expected this from Ms. Fletcher, though her growth as a writer is evident, I just wished she had grown a bit more in terms of actual writing ability and consistency. If you want to continue the Marina story line then get this book, after all we waited so long for it, but don't expect drastic improvements in writing style or consistency. I intended this review to be constructive criticism, as Ms. Fletcher has extraordinarily accomplished creative and imaginative ability.
