Most video and film editors understand that the story is central to their work and that editing choices need to serve the telling of that story in the best way possible. What they may not know, however, are all the valuable techniques to making this craft appear seamless and part of the busy editor’s normal workflow. This book takes an approach to editing that both beginners and intermediate editors will find refreshing. While other books approach the topic of editing by teaching the functions of the editing software, this book explains how you can make smart choices and use those functions to affect the story.
In the book you’ll learn workflow tips, time saving techniques, linear and non-linear theory, cutting techniques, enhancing emotion through music and sound effects, leveling and mastering audio, color correction, and most importantly, the role editing can have on the telling of the story.
Additional techniques are shown through multiple step-by-step videos available on the author’s site as well as clips from a documentary the author created on editing.

Quick and Dirty Overview Of Basic Storytelling
By GG
This book provides a generic overview of the filmmaking /storytelling process at a beginning level, but I think it makes many unfounded generalizations and oversimplifications, based on the author's experiences alone, which seem to be the basis for most everything in the book. He states, for example, "Nowadays, in most cases, a filmmaking operation is one person, doing many jobs, on a very powerful laptop. This is just the way things are in the state of filmmaking today." Really? I thought filmmaking was a collaborative effort. Don't you even need to work with an actor? But no, we are told it is now just a one-man show and that's just the way it is. Some parts of the book also shortchange the complexity that goes into both editing and filmmaking. In Chapter 4, Pacing: Timing and Types of Cuts, we are told there are: "Many different types of cuts available when you hit the editing board." But then we are only told of six and one of those we are told is "generally reserved for comedy." The six cuts are the hard cut, the jump cut, the L cut, the J cut, the popcorn cut (the comedy one), and cutting on the action. There is much more to editing than this. In Chapter 2, Conflict and Shot Selection, we are told that shot selection is one of the most important editing tasks, but only four types of shots are explained. These are the wide, medium, close, and B-roll. There are hundreds of shot types. And he defines B-roll as "pretty footage with no purpose." Never mind the standard terminology of insert shots or cutaways. It is now B-roll, pretty footage with no purpose. If it has no purpose, then why do people get it? Clearly, it has a purpose, even if it is to cover gaps in continuity.
I don't doubt the author's sincerity or passion about filmmaking, but I think he owes it to the profession to go deeper than this, especially for a thin softcover book near $40.

Well-written and insightful book
By BT
I just finished this book and as an editor with ten years of experience, but most of it not in narrative, it was really useful to read this to get a refresh on foundations of storytelling and how it applies to editing. I found the book smart, useful, and very clearly written, even if I didn't agree with everything. I think this is actually a must-read for anyone interested in editing. My only caveat is that the author uses two of his films (which you can download after buying the book) as examples for some of the theory, and both films are pretty amateur.
