Cherise Sinclair had the brilliant idea of putting a series within a series

Cherise Sinclair had the brilliant idea of putting a series within a series. This is book one of an adventure/mystery series that takes place within her larger romance series. Initially I thought this was brilliant. What a great way to keep from falling into a formulaic writing style. I loved Gabi's character. Although she was a bit unbelievable at times, even the Marcus noticed that one so don't boo me, she was interesting to read. Particularly as she tried to force herself to be the character that she needed to play for her work.
Marcus was more reserved. To be honest I don't remember that much about him. He was frustrated with Gabi's antics but he was shocked to discover the lack of trust the club owner had in his elite members. Trust was the was the ongoing theme of the book. I particularly liked the story within the story as Sinclair not only had the main storyline of Marcus/Gabi and the kidnappings, but there was a sub story line of trust between Z and Jess (the couple from the first Shadowland book). Jess has self assurance issues and Z is keeping secrets, not to mention he's all over the new girl and doesn't want Jess at the club. It's a great lesson in how communication and perception can easily screw with a relationship.
While you don't have to read the series from the beginning, as each story stands on it's own, I would recommend that you do. It adds a level of understanding to the books that wouldn't be there otherwise. Sinclair is an excellent author whose book never fail to be interesting and entertaining stories about life and relationships.

Debatable rating (spoilers)

Even though I enjoyed this story and I liked the two main characters, I still had to debate between a 2, 3 & 4 star rating. Over all, I thought the plot was good and the characters were engaging. I liked the way she integrated the characters from the previous stories.
The reason I considered giving the story a 2 or 3 star rating was this. Some of the things Gabi said and did were so over the top that it almost threw me out of the story a few times. If I was the spotter, red flags would have been going up all over the place. She could/should have been much more subtle. She didn't have to say and do ludicrous things every time she saw someone look at her.
The author had Jessica and Sally both on the list (for kidnapping) and they weren't 'in your face' with their defiance. Sally simply tended to top from the bottom and Jessica talked back to Z on occasion. But Jessica wasn't in the trainee program and she and Z had a personal relationship outside BDSM. Further, if Jessica's defiance/behavior was a '5' on a 0-10 scale, Gabi's was a '15'.
And, that's just it, Gabi was 'in your face' -- always. She didn't let up a second. If she saw people around her, she thought it meant to start talking very loudly (and who does that consistently?) and say absurd things like calling a Master "hot stuff". Really?!
Her behavior was so loud and so disruptive that it would have been impossible for the club (any club) to let her remain. And Shadowlands was an exclusive and private club.The rules and behaviors were even more strictly monitored. The spotter would have known that. Hence, the red flags. If I had witnessed everything she said and did, and knew she wasn't being kicked out -- when anyone else would have been -- I'd sure as hell be wondering why? Was she a plant --?? It would definitely have me thinking and scrutinizing things a bit more closely.
So, yes, although I loved the story, and I liked the characters, Gabi shouldn't have been yelling and saying such 'over the top' and 'in your face' things every single time she saw people. And since the Shadowlands is a BDSM club, there were people around her all the time!
It was a very close call for me. But the reason I ultimately went for 4 stars is because, despite everything I wrote above, I still enjoyed the story. That has to be a plus for the author.

I found the plot with the FBI trying to hunt down the slavers in The Shadowlands fascinating. Loved that this series started to go a different route with a theme. I was excited that I finally got to Marcus story. He is the sexy Dom in a business suit that alone gets me hot and bothered. His story did not disappoint.
"I love you, Gabrielle, and you are mine. We will be together, sugar." His lips curved. "If your brattiness bothers me, I think you know that I can - and will - simply f*** it right out of you."
I will admit I was a little nervous going into Make Me Sir because Gabi has to play a bratty sub and after reading Lean On Me #4 I felt that heroine was more on the bratty side and did not sit too well with me. To my surprise I ended up loving and feeling sorry for Gabi character. You could tell she really was not like that and was hard for her at times. She played out the bratty character perfect. She did give me a few giggles with her one liners.
"You best count for me. If you show me you're sorry, I'll stop at ten. Otherwise I'll spank you until the cows come home."
"That's a dumb-a** idea." She was too angry to curb her mouth. "You're a dumb-a**." She tried to kick and got nowhere. "Even Jesus thinks you're a dumb-a**."
